Canine Influenza FYI
During the summer of 2008, a few cases of Canine Influenza
were diagnosed at area dog daycare centers. A letter was
sent to clients of these centers with information about this
canine disease. The highlights of the letter are:
- There is no approved vaccine available, and unexposed dogs
have no natural immunity to this influenza virus, so almost every
exposed dog will get canine flu.
- Canine Flu symptoms are very similar to kennel cough caused by
Bordetella.
- Dogs are most contagious within the first 3 days after
exposure - often before they show symptoms. Most are no longer
contagious after 7 days.
- The Canine Flu virus is very susceptible to bleach and
quaternary ammonium disinfectants. Even if no disinfecting
is done, the virus only survives in the environment for about
3 days.
- Dog owners should wait at least 3 days, preferably a
week, after visiting the dog park before taking their dog to
a kennel - and vice versa - to avoid spreading this disease.
- Dogs that have already had Canine Flu are immune for 2-3
years, so can go to dog parks, dog daycares, kennels, etc.
with no danger of contracting Canine Flu.

The Briargate scene is really going to the dogs—but that’s not a bad thing! Like a lot of dog owners, you’re probably more inclined to like people or even patronize a business that’s pet-friendly. Thankfully, the Colorado PETacular magazine is taking the work out of discovering who those people and businesses are at the Promenade Shops at Briargate while kicking off the holiday season.
From 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 15th, the PETacular is hosting its first "PETacular Yappy Hour" event. Think 'hip outing' to which you can bring your dog; PETacular publisher Audree Grubesic says this will be a premiere doggie mingle and networking event that includes pups at hand.
