Pudgy Pets Pose Problems
By Debbie Evert
The other night I was channel surfing and found a show titled “Fat Pets” on Animal Planet. My interest was piqued because of this story assignment. The show highlighted several dogs and their owners.
Wallace, a 43-pound King Charles spaniel, was in grave danger of living less than a year due to health issues. This rotund rover should weigh only 11-18 pounds. His mum Millie said he had “food issues.” She sought the counsel of a behaviorist to help her take leadership and not allow Wallace to dominate for food. Eventually, Wallace trimmed down with consistent behavior adaptation from both mum and dog.
I sat in amazement as I watched owners love their pets almost to death with treats, homemade meals, and weekly butcher shop trips to purchase 16 pounds of raw meat “because that’s what he eats”. The mindset of all but one owner changed due to intervention of friends and veterinarians.
